The Mermaid group discusses and reads the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and seeks to consider the importance of the Vale of Belvoir and its Castle in Shakespeare's England. It takes its name from the literary circle of William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson and other figures, including perhaps Roger Manners 5th Earl of Rutland, meeting at the Mermaid Tavern in 1605.
