Conserving the Bottesford Chapel 'Great European War of 1914' Roll Honour

Starting the journey

By David Middleton

The Bottesford Primitive Methodist Chapel Roll of Honour has been displayed for 100 years. Reframed in the 1980s it is now in need of conservation. The Heritage Lottery Fund award to the Bottesford Parish Centenary Project has enabled this to happen.

The Roll is a unique document within the Parish of Bottesford. The war memorials in Bottesford and Muston commemorate those lost on active service. The Roll of Honour lists all this who served from the Chapel, along with their regiments and whether they were listed as casualties.

The blank Roll was printed by W.A. Hammond, Holborn Hall, London E.C. These were the official publishers to the Primitive Methodists. The design includes allied flags and refers to ‘The Great European War of 1914.’ This would indicate that it was published very early in the conflict when it was thought that is would be a short lived military affair.

Full details of all those listed will be prepared as part of the Centenary Project.

In the meantime the process of conservation has started.
