Muston School, 1923
A group of children from Muston village school, c.1923. Can you help identify who they are? The exact location is not recorded but may be in the grassy yard around the school house.

You may already know but it is the first time I have seen this picture. The girl front left is Mary Elizabeth Calcraft.
I believe the picture was taken on the lawn between the school house and the school building: the fence separating these areas. Behind the children can be seen a wooden shed which when l went to school there was used to store sports equipment although it looked a little different when l went to school in the 1950s, probably repaired.
Behind can be seen the wall which separated the school yard from a grass paddock used for cattle. The wall then joined railings to enclose the yard; still there now.
I can remember most of the school children sitting on this wall one afternoon behind the shed with teacher, having an impromptu nature lesson watching green woodpeckers who had made a nest-hole in a tree over the wall, and starlings having a battle for ownership of the property. In the end the starlings won and claimed home.
Dear Tony, thanks for this fascinating information and memories. This is a lovable picture, and you have pinned it down in time and space. Neil (editor)
