  • You may already know but it is the first time I have seen this picture. The girl front left is Mary Elizabeth Calcraft.

  • I believe the picture was taken on the lawn between the school house and the school building: the fence separating these areas. Behind the children can be seen a wooden shed which when l went to school there was used to store sports equipment although it looked a little different when l went to school in the 1950s, probably repaired.
Behind can be seen the wall which separated the school yard from a grass paddock used for cattle. The wall then joined railings to enclose the yard; still there now.
I can remember most of the school children sitting on this wall one afternoon behind the shed with teacher, having an impromptu nature lesson watching green woodpeckers who had made a nest-hole in a tree over the wall, and starlings having a battle for ownership of the property. In the end the starlings won and claimed home.

  • Dear Tony, thanks for this fascinating information and memories. This is a lovable picture, and you have pinned it down in time and space. Neil (editor)
