Planting the Memorial Tree at RAF Bottesford, 1995.
Veteran WW2 airmen and their friends and family watch the ceremonial planting of a memorial tree on the grass in front of the preserved WW2 control tower at Normanton/Long Bennington airfield (RAF Bottesford) during the 50th Anniversary celebrations in 1995. The tree commemorates the sacrifice of the Australian and other airmen during WW2. A representative of the Australian Air Force is planting the tree, accompanied by His Grace the Duke of Rutland and Geoffrey Spencer, Rector of Bottesford.
For details of the airfields wartime history, consult the chapters of Vincent Holyoak’s book “On the Wings of the Morning” that are displayed on this website.
