The village fetes that used to be held on the lawn of Bottesford’s Old Rectory are remembered with great affection. During the 1950s, Canon Blackmore played host to villagers, and the Duke a Duchess of Rutland added their support and enthusiasm to the occasion. These two pictures show a demonstration of square dancing by the Scouts and Guides.
Michael Bradshaw adds the following observations, “What a happy memory. It’s a long time ago. I think we were about 13 or 14, so that would make it around 1953 or 54. As for names of the dancers – in the group with pairs dancing in the centre are Peter Simpson and Jill Bagnall (nee Howitt), to the left of them is Richard Cole ( Henry ) and Maureen Cooper, and to rhe right going anti clockwise are possibly Maureen Tinkler and Ray Bolland, and [on the extreme right] yours truly Michael Bradshaw, but unfortunately Liz is not visible.”
“The second photo of the group in a circle: on the far side are Tom Simpson, Maureen Cooper, Michael Bradshaw, Jill Howitt, ?possibly Ray Bolland, I think Liz Bradshaw nee Ronan, ?Richard Cole and last ??possibly Pauline Taylor nee Gilbert.”
