Close-up of above showing route of new road.
One wonders if allotment owners opposed the new road development? Did they own their plots? Were they compensated for abandoning their plots? By whom - landowner or highway authority?
In 1900 garden and allotment holders at a site in Nottingham formed a mutual benefit society to purchase the land on which their allotments stood. A plan was drawn up for road access and many went on to build houses for themselves. Eventually the roadways were adopted by the local authority.
