In 1613 the infant heir to an earldom died. Six years later two sisters were hanged -- for his murder by witchcraft. Margaret and Philippa Flower, their mother and their cat Rutterkin were said to have caused the maladies of the Earl of Rutland's sons Henry & Francis Manners at Belvoir Castle.

This story has reverberated across four centuries. It reflects village and castle life, the law against witchcraft, religious conviction, evolving theology and the changing role of medicine.

Set in the context of Jacobean rural society, this book records and appraises an extraordinary conflict of faith and fear.  Local jealousies and inexplicable sickness converged around the death of a little boy and his distraught and powerful father's pain.

Michael Honeybone read History at Oxford, and lectures widely. He wrote The Books of Grantham, of Bottesford and of the Vale of Belvoir.

Case bound, some 200 pages and 60 illustrations including original engravings, contemporary paintings and modern photographs, plus a reprint of the 1619 Belvoir Pamphlet
