Barkestone-le-Vale Family History and Photographic Exhibition

October 8th to 15th, 2011

If you are interested in people and families in the Vale of Belvoir, or fascinated by investigating family history, this is not to be missed. Barkestone is only a short drive from nearby Grantham, Melton and Nottingham. The village is on the route of the No.24 bus from Melton to Bottesford, a tour-hourly service Monday to Saturday. Trains stop at Bottesford (for Nottingham and Grantham/East Coast Main Line) and Melton (for Leicester/Midlands Main Line and Peterborough/East Coast Main Line). Unfortunately, the village pub has had to close (like so many others these days), but good food can be had in the pubs in neighbouring villages.

I would be most grateful if it can be confirmed where exactly is the exhibition to be held this year (2009) I am confused as to whether it is Bottesford or Barkstone.
Thanking in anticipation .

Hello Mary,
The Barkestone-le-Vale Family History and Photographic Week exhibition will be held in the parish church in Barkestone-le-Vale, not in Bottesford. We are sorry if this was not altogether clear, and hope that you will be able to visit the exhibition. I should perhaps that this is not the same as the Bottesford Living History Project exhibition that is planned for the weekend of Oct 31st - November 1st at the Fuller Room in Bottesford (why not come to both, if it doesn't entail too much travelling!).

Thank you Neil for this info. Am very grateful for the clarification. Yes, will try to visit both events.
Am particularly interested in the Ward family and their links with Smith's, Knapp's and Durrance's.

I am also connected to the Durrance family, my name is Malcolm Horace Durance Ellis (with 1 'R' ) mostly from Leicester but originally from Frisby, Barkestone etc.

That is interesting Malcolm. Are you connected to Charles Ernest Durance deceased of Barkestone?

I dont think so but there was a Charles Duurance b. 1782, Burton Lazars, then William Durrance, 1810, Thrussington, then Isaac Durance, 1846, Frisby, then my Grandmother Jerusha Durance, 1882, Leicester. Isaac had a Brother Charles, 1844. Sheila Marriott was kind enough to give me information at the church and she is going to send a Gedcom of the whole Durrance family I believe. My e-mail is m.h.d.ellis@googlemail.com

Is there going to be another Family History Photographic Exhibition in 2010 at Barkstone. If so do you have a date fixed yet. We have Turner ancestors from Barkstone le Vale.

Good to hear from another Kitching. The Barkestone Family Tree contains great many members of the Kitching family and the Barkestone Photograph Collection has hundreds of Kitching pictures, many of which are Victorian. I would be very pleased to help anyone trying to trace their Kitching ancestors. Please contact me at sheilabarkestone@btinternet.com. Yes there will be anothe Family History & Photographic Exhibition in 2010. It will take place during the week 9th-16th October and I would be pleased to welcome descendents of the Turner family. They are on the Barkestone Family Tree but I'm afraid I have very few Turner photographs. Always hoping to find more to add to our collection. Hi, I wonder if you can help me I have been trying to trace my ancestor's for quite a few year's now. I seem to hit that wall, at William Cant from Barkestone & Mary Hallam from Bottesford, my Great grandfather was James Hallam Cant married to Elizabeth Shelton. I found this site on google saw all the wonderful old photographs. If anybody had pictures or knew anything about the Cant family. anything would be great. Many Thanks

We know that our relative Isabella Davidson Musson nee Murison's grave is in your churchyard. She passed away in 2002. We are trying to find out the names of her parents. We know she had a sister Mary. We believe that Isabella was the headmistress of a school.

I am interested in Barkestone History as some of my mother's family lived there in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Will there be another exhibition in 2011-12 and does the historical society hold open meetings? Julie Clayton

Dear Julie, I expect there will be another exhibition in Barkestone parish church during the autumn of 2011, and will post details on this site as soon as I hear them. There is no Barkestone historical society at present, but the Bottesford society holds meetings on the second thursday of the month from September to May, starting at 7.30, in the Fuller Room (part of the old village school building). The new meetings programme will be posted on this site as soon as it is available - watch this space! Visitors are made very welcome.

I am very sorry to have missed the exhibition, as per usual I have only just found out about it. Researching my family for a number of years predominantly on my paternal line and now on my maternal line which has led me to the "Vale". My family's amongst others are the Deweys and Watchorn's. Hoping you have the opportunity to exhibit next year.
