A picture by Percy Stimpson

From the Bottesford History Archive

This shows a pen and wash picture created by Mr Percy Stimpson in 1954 on a page of Pauline Taylor's (nee Gilbert) autograph book. Pauline was then a pupil at Bottesford village school, where Percy Stimpson was one of the teachers and Laurie Dewey was headmaster. She recalls that Mr Stimpson had the book in his hands for only a single night or so. The picture confirms that he was a talented and capable artist.

The picture shows a ruined medieval castle standing on the bank of a river. At first sight, it could be thought to be Newark Castle. Mr Stimpson lived at Papplewick, cycling to Bottesford on Monday mornings and then back on Friday evenings, lodging with the Misses James at 6, Church Street during the week. Clearly he was well able to cycle to Newark on a free day. Is this a picture based on a photograph he had taken at Newark? Or is the scene somewhere else such as at Warwick Castle? What do you think?
