  • Kate It was really nice to see the war memorial dedication and form of service. Harold Cooper was my Great Uncle and was killed on 2nd Dec 1917. He was christened Thomas Harold, but for reasons unknown mainly referred to by his second name. He has a memorial at Tyne Cot War Cemetery, Belgium. I am also sure that my Great Grand Mother, Mary Cooper and her daughter Constance would have been in attendance that evening. Seeing documents like this, make my family connection to Bottesford a little more tangible. I do have a photo of Harold in uniform if you are interested. Regards Don Roach

  • We were in the graveyard on Monday  looking at John Thomas Cooper’s gravestone: ‘Also of Brother Harold Killed in Action in France 1917 Aged 31 Years’. We would very much like a photograph of Harold Cooper. We are trying to build up as much information as possible for both the Bottesford and the Leicestershire war Memorials project.

  • I was very privileged to be asked to design the War Memorial for WW2, especially as I was only in my second year (of seven) as a student of Architecture in Nottingham. My father was Canon Blackmore and Rector of Bottesford at that time. I still have one of the original drawings for the design of the War Memorial, which is shown in my book about the Second World War, entitled Gone, But Not Forgotten. If you would like a copy of the original drawing, please let me know. Stanley Blackmore.

  • We were very pleased to hear from you, as we, and many others in the village, have read your book, ‘Gone but Not Forgotten‘ with much pleasure. We were particularly interested in your descriptions of the Rectory before its conversion. We would be delighted if you would consider adding any of your memories of Bottesford to this web-site.

If you look at the page  Bottesford War Memorials in Topics – Wartime Bottesford, you will see that I have quoted your account of the designing of the memorial at some length. I hope you do not mind this.

  • Attention : Kate Pugh. Thank you for your reply to my E-Mail to David Middleton, (I am not at all sure that I was writing to the correct person, so please forgive me if I have been somewhat muddled !). I was delighted that you had quoted from my book, and I will try to look back in some of my papers, and my father’s memoirs, to see if I can find anything that might be of interest. If so, it may be too large to despatch via E-Mail, or your “Comment” slot, so could you let me have the name and address of the person to whom I should write. It would be most helpful. Thank you so much, and may I take this opportunity of wishing you, and all at Bottesford, a very Happy New Year. From : Stanley Blackmore.

We will also refund your postage to you. Please post the material to me, Neil Fortey, at 4, Church Street, Bottesford NG13 0BX.
