View from Holliers - gas works and railway crossing
Looking NW from the church tower parapet, this scene shows the railway, a goods train travelling eastwards in the Grantham direction, approaching Bottesford. The level crossing gate keeper’s cottage is long gone, and the crossing is operated automatically. Also seen is Bottesford’s tiny coal gas works, still in operation around 1950. The trees behind and to the left of the gasometer are the site of the brickyard once operated by the Challands family: the site now houses an industrial estate and the municipal re-cycling centre.
