Mrs Wendy Cross (nee Topps) kindly provided this remarkable record of Bottesford children celebrating the opening of the Victory Commemoration HallĀ  in January 1947.

Wendy ‘rescued’ this photograph. Even though it shows signs of wear and tear the vitality of the occasion is clearly recorded.

The Grantham Journal records on January 24th 1947 that the children were enjoying watching a Punch and Judy Show.

We have some of the names. Please do add any you recognise

  • I think some of the children, older of course, can be seen on the school photograph for 1948-49 (What Year Was This). Isn’t it Neville Bagnall top right?

  • I’m the little girl 3rd from the right in picture 3. I’ve also got a copy of this picture and didn’t realise it was the opening of the Village Hall. I can still vaguely remember the time – I think that we were watching Punch & Judy. We lived in a small cottage at the back of Winns shop in 1947 . Dad was in the RAF and shortly after this we moved to Middle Wallop although we came back to Bottesford regularly to see my grandparents – Arthur & May Ward
