Flying Scotsman @ Bottesford Junction

By David Middleton

A Friday night rumour went round  the village that the Flying Scotsman would pass through on Saturday morning.

We made it down to Orston Crossing just as the train was approaching.

The Flying Scotsman (no 4472) is pulling The Fenman train. Not being a train expert I am not sure about the details.

It was all over in a blur.

Fortunately the photographs came  out and the children had something to look at in a more relaxed pace.

These were taken early Autumn 1984 – not sure of the exact date.

If you know the date and have more details please do add a comment.

  • I believe the date “The Fenman” train pulled by 4472 Flying Scotsman came through Bottesford is on or around 24 Nov 1984 as I have some photographs of the same train at Saxondale. (That is the date I have on the negs)

  • Many thanks Graham – appreciate knowing when the date was. My daughter has reminded me that it was the morning of her 8th birthday party – which was held on that date – must have made an impression!!

  • It was definitely the 10th Nov 1984. My Grandad (JohnPeggs) took her from March Depot light engine and support coach to Spalding and backed on to 13 coaches. He took her from Spaulding to sleaford and was relieved there by York men I believe. I do have the firemans name but it has slipped my mind. I have a fantastic picture taken from Sleaford south Signal box by the signalman and we have a picture of four generations in my family (great grandad, grandad, dad and myself) on March shed.
